I have to say this past year has been filled with lots of ups and downs because of financial issues, I considered putting off the challenge until 2016. Due to the support and encouragement of my friends, family, and fans..I decided to continue on with the challenge, and I am so glad I did!
I knew that I wasn’t going to get $50,000, but maybe I could shoot for the 2nd goal of $30,000, I am proud to say I am going to reach that goal, I should reach somewhere between $30 to $40,000 in donations, which will make my total amount donated since 2010 $80,000 (30k total) or more! Never would I have dreamed as a single mom I would be able to donate this amount and help inspire others to pay it forward like I have done.
I started the non profit in August 2014 not know what direction to go in or how to get donations, I just knew I wanted to do more, and if doors would open that allowed me to expand the amount of people I could reach or help, I would take action on these opportunities.
I still donated to other charities because my only goal was to help others. It seemed to be more difficult to work with them for different reasons. Tired of feeling like my donations didn’t matter especially since I never got to meet the people I was helping, I decided maybe I should take a different approach and start helping others on my own. It happened quite by accident when I had collected 25 backpacks that I filled with school supplies, and was going to give to a charity that I was working with at the time. I sent several texts asking if she could pick up and no response even a text “Hey is everything okay? I am worried about you…nothing” With school almost starting, and my busy work schedule, I reached out to the facebook garage sales and posted I had free backpacks for those in need. The response was overwhelming, I could of passed out 100 of them to fill the needs. Of course I had no income requirement, just a pay it forward moment. I had the families come pick them up, and I thought this is kind of cool.
I reached out to another charity that was just starting out wanting to form a bond and help them grow as well, soon the same thing happened..my messages were being ignored. It made me feel sad, and wonder why..maybe this was a sign I should give up or was it?
I wondered why I was being tested, maybe I had to get really hurt and angry to be pushed to the point to do it on my own. I really liked doing the backpacks where I guess it was like a group project. I decided to help families for Thanksgiving and sponsor children for Christmas. I remember my stomach in knots as more and more people requested help, and not being able to say no. I wanted to do 5 families for Thanksgiving, I did 12. I had 5.00 in my bank account at times, what was I doing? I wanted to do 50 children, I am at 70! But people were noticing, and telling others about me, a friend of mine was telling businesses about me, and they were offering to help. Then that ah ha moment hit, so that is what it means to fund raise, tell people what you are doing! Now, I am not racking the donation in by any means, most have been from my own pocket, but I got $100.00 from a family that just wanted to pay it forward, and would like to remain anoymous, Albertson’s gave me a $25.00 gift card, WoodForest donated $20.00, and I received another $60.00 donation. So this paid for my Thanksgiving donation. My friends were donating any of their unwanted items such as clothing, household items, ect…so my total continued to rise.
Last week I felt so overwhelmed, I had so much to do, was I going to be able to make this all work? With no financial backers I would not be able to provide expensive items such as video games, in fact, I didn’t have a lot of toys because I buy items on clearance. My money was running low, and I still needed 6k to hit $30k..I asked my co workers to remember me when they were clearing out things to make room for the Christmas presents they would be getting…They sure did, they sent $5,000.00 in donations my way which included a lot of toys which would help meet some of the needs of the Christmas families!
On Sunday, my work decided to collect gifts for Super Coupon Woman Foundation which was awesome, because I was running short on time to seek out financial donations to help me with the families. I am so amazed with all the good things that have come out of this challenge, sometimes I doubted myself whether I was making a difference, I have to say others kept my me motivated by the faith they had in me.
I am working on a book to be released in 2016 which I will share my story of how I went from a struggling mom to donating close to $100,000 to my community! As you can see, I still have financial struggles that could get me down, and keep me from donating, but I choose not to let lifes ups and downs keep me from paying it forward, It’s just who I am, and it’s best to embrace it and do the best I can! I promise to never make others feel like their donation does not matter because it with Super Coupon Woman Foundation…it does!
